Abstract

Development of cosmetic formulations based on natural ingredients is a current challenge for the cosmetic industry. Salvia hispanica (chia) is a herbaceous plant that has been consumed for thousands of years due to its high nutritional value and extensive health-promoting properties. Chitosan is a biopolymer well known for its great applications in cosmetics due to its biological and technological properties. The objective of the work was to design a cosmetic cream from the seed oil of Salvia Hispánica L. (Chia) and chitosan through the design of experiments. Some quality parameters of chia oil were determined, showing satisfactory results. An (o/w) cream was designed using the constrained three-component D-optimal mixture design: stearic acid, cetyl alcohol, and water. The response variables were pH and extensibility. Data were fitted to linear models, obtaining significance p < 0.05, loss of fit p>0.05 and adjusted R2 close to 1. In addition, freeze-thaw stress cycle tests and centrifugation were performed. The preliminary sensory evaluation carried out on the selected formulations showed the degree of acceptance. The microbiological analysis performed did not show bacterial or fungal growth.
