tóxicas a nivel mundial, entre ellas: Microcystis
(cianobacteria), Anabaena, Aphanizomenon,
Planktothrix, Cylindrospermopsis y
Nodularia, ya que producen efectos sobre
los organismos debido a las toxinas. Estas
floraciones algales nocivas (FAN) representan
una amenaza directa para la salud tanto
humana como animal (2).
Las FAN representan además un peligro para
los ecosistemas acuáticos ya que debido a
las toxinas que producen pueden degradar
la calidad del agua y asimismo causar gran
mortalidad de peces en peligro de extinción
(4).
En Ecuador la mayor parte de su desarrollo
se cimienta en el Ecosistema Guayas a través
de la agricultura, ganadería, acuicultura,
pesca, minería, navegación, turismo y
asientos poblacionales. Desde hace 15 años,
en este lugar, se establece la existencia de
un elemento enlazante entre las actividades
humanas y la naturaleza, el nitrógeno (N),
que al fijarse biológicamente a la simbiosis
entre un alga (Anabaena) y el superorganismo
Azolla, en el sistema de arrozales de la
Cuenca del río Guayas está destinado a
reproducir nuevos paradigmas en el sistema
agrícola, alimenticio, de salud, económico y
medioambiental del país (5).
Muchas especies de fitoplancton son
utilizadas como indicadores de la calidad del
agua, debido a características particulares
como: el poseer un ciclo de vida corto y
sensibilidad a modificaciones físico químicos
del entorno, especialmente las relacionadas
con la eutrofización (enriquecimiento de
nutrientes). Esto determina principalmente
cambios en la densidad y características
organolépticas del agua, que en algunos
casos es usada como fuente de captación
para ser potabilizada.
“El agua es vida, el saneamiento de ésta
es dignidad” este es el mensaje con que se
concluyó la novena edición del Foro Mundial
del Agua en Dakar 2022. En primer lugar,
garantizar el derecho al acceso al agua y el
saneamiento de ésta para toda la población.
Además de garantizar la accesibilidad y
resiliencia del agua a futuro, asegurar fondos
adecuados y gobernanza inclusiva de los
recursos hídricos; y finalmente, la intención
de fortalecer la cooperación internacional
(6).
La acción fundamental de toda planta
potabilizadora es un buen tratamiento de
clarificación y desinfección al agua cruda
de captación, para que su producto final de
entrega a los habitantes cumpla con todos los
requisitos específicos incluidos en la Norma
Técnica Ecuatoriana NTE INEN 1108 sexta
edición. Si bien la norma no menciona dentro
de sus requisitos a las algas como parámetro
de estudio sí establece los parámetros de
Olor y Sabor con “no objetable” como Límite
máximo permitido (7).
En Ecuador, el Río Daule es la principal fuente
de abastecimiento de agua para la ciudad de
Guayaquil, que consume 970 000 m3 de agua
diarios. La concesionaria de agua potable
Interagua tiene 4 estaciones de bombeo y
su capacidad instalada es de 1’950.000 m
3
por día, cuenta con 3 plantas de tratamiento
que están ubicadas en el km. 26 vía Daule,
campamento La Toma (8).
En el 2010, el agua potable en la ciudad de
Guayaquil presentó un alto grado de algas
presentes en el río Daule, y la producción
de agua se ha visto afectada en su olor y
sabor. Según la documentación revisada
se encuentran varios trabajos referentes al
tema y son los siguientes:

abundancia, y diversidad en sistemas de
potabilización de agua. Actualmente existen
registros de problemas de algas en las
Plantas Potabilizadoras, que se presentan
principalmente como un taponamiento en
los filtros durante el proceso; los problemas
actuales consisten en que no se cuenta con
la identificación de las algas para aplicar
tratamientos específicos para su control.
