Prevalence of overweight/obesity and its relationship with sleep quality in health professionals at the José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital

Abstract

Obesity is considered a pandemic level public health problem, characterized by increased intake of energy rich foods, lack of physical activity and the addition of factors such as lack of sleep, among others. In this research, the objective was to determine the relationship between obesity and lack of sleep in health professionals at the José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital, Ecuador. An analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted. The sample, selected randomly, consisted of 202 health professionals who met the inclusion criteria. The information was tabulated and analyzed by the IBM SPSS V15 program and interpreted in tables according to the variables presented. In the present study of 202 health professionals, 47% presents overweight, 6.9% obesity class I and 1.5% obesity class II, of these 71.3% have problems about their sleep quality. Compared whit BMI, 112 of the studied professionals showed overweight and obesity of which 56.9% present impaired sleep quality (p >0.005 e IR 1.234) which shows the high risk to get obesity.
