Obesity, breast cancer and resistance to antineoplastic treatment: molecular mechanisms

Keywords: breast cancer, adipocytes, postmenopausal, tumor cells, obesity

Abstract

Breast cancer is a condition that occurs frequently in women worldwide, and that produces negative and aggressive consequences on health and lifestyle. It is important to know the risk factors and the factors that maintain the disease, in order to prevent its appearance and improve the treatment of the disease. The main objective of the research was to analyze the relationship between obesity and resistance to treatment in breast cancer in order to provide an overview to health professionals about this problem. The research carried out is a narrative review using qualitative methods, since the information obtained is based on the reality of the problems raised in other studies, from which convincing results can be obtained. There is a direct association between obesity and the increase of breast cancer, especially in postmenopausal women, since hormonal regulation is eliminated, which generates weight gain. This in turn causes the gene expression of tumor cells to increase and the cancer does not decrease. In addition, obesity is associated with hormonal alterations, such as an increase in local estrogen production in breast adipose tissue, which may promote growth and resistance to hormonal treatment of breast cancer.
