This article presents a systematic literature review on the strategic role of information systems (IS) in the digital transformation (DT) of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Ecuador. Following the PRISMA protocol, we identified, screened, and analyzed 33 studies published between 2018 and 2025 across academic databases and institutional sources. A thematic synthesis organizes findings into five dimensions: (i) adopted technologies (cloud-based ERP, data analytics, e-commerce, RPA), (ii) adoption barriers (financial constraints, digital skills gaps, change resistance), (iii) enabling factors (strategic alignment, leadership, institutional support and training), (iv) digital maturity (diagnosis and roadmapping), and (v) public policies (frameworks fostering connectivity and digitalization). Results indicate meaningful progress in technology adoption, alongside persistent structural obstacles that constrain scalability and sustained impact. Beyond operational automation, IS enable data-driven decision-making, customer orientation, and business model innovation. Research gaps include the shortage of longitudinal evidence, the need to adapt maturity models to micro and small firms, and limited assessment of underexplored strategic sectors (e.g., agribusiness and manufacturing). Practically, we recommend scalable technology adoption paths, capacity building, and policy designs that mitigate asymmetries in access and financing to foster an inclusive, sustainable digitalization
