Expecting and having a child implies changes in family dynamics, which increase when that child has an intellectual disability. However, individual and family processes are different when dealing with disability as a couple or alone. The purpose of this study is to analyze the family dynamics and coping strategies of Ecuadorian parents of children with intellectual disabilities, comparing mothers with a partner and single mothers, and comparing fathers and mothers with a partner. Forty-one mothers (23 single and 18 coupled) and eighteen fathers whose children had intellectual disabilities were studied. The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Assessment Scale, the Family Satisfaction Scale and the Coping Inventory were used. No differences were found in family cohesion, adaptability and satisfaction among single or coupled mothers. Mothers who had a partner used more problem-focused coping strategies. Single mothers used more emotion-focused coping strategies. Family satisfaction was related to using problem-focused coping strategies. Mothers with partners used emotional discharge more than their partners. It is important to take into account family dimensions and coping strategies when planning psychosocial interventions for families whose children have intellectual disabilities.
