Phytochemistry and toxicologic study of native plants of the ecuadorian rain forest

Abstract

There are many native plants in the amazon rain forest whose qualities should be studied to know their toxicity, phytochemical composition and possible medical uses. Our goal was to find in the ecuadorian rain forest plants that have latex and resins to do the preliminary study of their toxicity and phytochemical composition in order to use these plants as embolizing substances to treat some diseases. We looked for the literature to identify some plants located in the Ecuadorian rain forest that have high content of latex and resins. Thirty and three plants were selected, the extracts of five plants were assessed by toxicological and phytochemicals studies using standardize techniques. Williams criteria and Hill logarithm scale for toxicity studies and Chromatogaphic techniques for phytochemical studies. We have found that the extracts of Sapotaceae pouteria aimito, Apocynaceae Lacmellea spaciosa, Moraceae Ficus yoponensis and Euphorbiaceae Sapium glandulosum are toxic according to Williams criteria and they have a high content of resins. Therefore, they should have undertaken to further studies to stablish their posible therapeuthic uses as embolizing agents.
