Abstract

The disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) has become a worldwide public health problem. Several viral infections such as SARS, MERS, and influenza have been associated with adverse outcomes during pregnancy. The objective of this study was to determine the symptoms and possible risks in pregnant women infected with SARS-CoV-2, as well as the complications in fetuses and newborns whose mothers were infected by the novel coronavirus. A literature review in English and Spanish was performed in order to retrieve information about the risks of COVID-19 during pregnancy. Data were retrieved from scientific publications available on the Web of Science, Cochrane, PubMed, and Scopus websites. The observed results were in pregnant patients, the first symptoms of COVID-19 were fever, cough, dyspnea, myalgia, and fatigue; while headache, hemoptysis, diarrhea, and sputum were less common. The majority of studies found no evidence of vertical maternal-fetal transmission in pregnant women with COVID-19. It is concluded that pregnant women do not appear to be more susceptible to the consequences of COVID-19 infection, in contrast to the general population. However, within the evolution of the disease, it must be taken into account that there are risk factors such as prematurity or fetal distress; although the possibility of transplacental transmission has not been fully proven.
