Level of knowledge in cardiopulmonary resuscitation in relatives of patients with heart disease

Abstract

In 2015, heart disease caused 17.7 million deaths, of which almost 80% of cardiac arrest events occurred outside the hospital. The objective of the study was to identify the level of knowledge about cardiopulmonary resuscitation that relatives of patients with heart disease have in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. It was executed with a quantitative approach of descriptive, prospective and cross-sectional scope, the study population was represented by 129 companions of patients who entered cardiac catheterization in the months of October 2021 to February 2022. The instrument that was used in this investigation to measure the level of knowledge, it was a questionnaire previously validated at the discretion of experts, with a Cronbach's Alpha coefficient of 0.78. The data obtained were processed with the SPSS program. 76,7% have a low level of knowledge, 40,3% know what to do during an emergency cardiopulmonary event, so it was also shown that those who have a family member who died of cardiac arrest have more knowledge in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It is concluded that the high degree of morbidity and mortality is directly related to the lack of knowledge that relatives of patients with heart disease have about cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques.
