The emergency contraceptive pill is a method used to prevent unwanted pregnancies, yet fallacies concerning beliefs and knowledge regarding its use lead the population to fear its application. A literature review was conducted in scientific databases on the use of the emergency contraceptive pill worldwide. A narrative review was carried out based on 50 articles that met the inclusion criteria through search equations using Boolean operators and descriptors in health sciences (DeSC) and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) in scientific databases such as Scopus, ProQuest, PubMed, SciELO, and Redalyc, besides health organizations such as WHO, PAHO, and MOH. As a result of the literature review, ECP is used worldwide by women of childbearing age due to the risk of pregnancy; Among the factors associated with its use are the level of sexual awareness and behavior; indicated in contraceptive failure and unprotected sex. It presents complications such as: headache, nausea, irregular vaginal bleeding and fatigue. Nursing interventions may include the promotion of contraceptive methods for the prevention of pregnancy and venereal diseases. In conclusion the countries should provide family planning programs with the necessary information to enable sexual partners to make their own decisions, choosing the methods that best suit their needs.
