Measuring dependency in adults with disabilities: a literature review
Abstract
The aim of this literature review is to identify quantitative methodologies used for the measurement of dependence in adults with disabilities. The analysis of the findings of the bibliographic search (N=431) was carried out according to the PRISMA stages of systematic review. The inclusion criteria were books or articles published in peer reviewed journals between 2010-2020 in English, Spanish or Portuguese, the study participants between 18 and 64 years of age and participants not institutionalized. Six studies were selected for the extraction stage from which we analyze the characteristics of the populations studied, dependency measurement tools, definitions of disability and dependency used, reported results and limitations of the studies stated by the authors. In all the studies considered the measurement of dependency is used as an independent variable. Also, there are a variety of terms to refer to dependency, generating confusion and at times erroneous results. The contribution of this article may be of interest to improve the training of human resources working with people with disabilities and those who make decisions regarding services and policies that have an impact on the quality of life of people with disabilities.Downloads
