Abstract

The Teak wood is characterized by its high resistance to microorganisms and insects, a characteristic attributed to its chemical composition, which makes its cultivation, development and exploitation constantly increase the generation waste that is not treated properly. For that, it was proposed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of extracts of different polarities obtained from the residual bark generated in the wood industry using the Soxhlet extraction method, determining the extractables and their yields. The ethereal extract it presents a higher yield with a value of 69.01% suggesting that the composition of Teak is mainly by apolar compounds, including resins and other substances present in the bark, modifying the yield. In the Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) the eluent mixture used (N-butanol, acetic acid, water 4: 1: 5) allowed the run of solutes that were visible by UV radiation at 365 nm, emitting a fluorescent blue coloration that has been reported for phenolic compounds. In the evaluation of the antimicrobial activity, the modified Kirby-Bauer method was used with each extracts, against the pathogens: Pseudomona aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Aspergillus niger.
