INTERPERSONAL REACTIVITY INDEX: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PERFORMANCE AMONG MEN AND WOMEN FROM BUENOS AIRES

Abstract: Previous research has shown that gender influences the scores obtained by healthy subjects on the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) empathy scale. Currently, little is known about this topic in adult individuals from Buenos Aires. Objective: To compare the performance of healthy adults, from Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires and Gran Buenos Aires, on a scale that assesses empathy in order to analyse the effect that gender has on said performance. Method: The IRI scale was administered to a sample of 90 subjects (56 women and 34 men) to assess whether there is a difference in their empathic ability based on gender. Results: The data showed that women obtained higher scores on the Fantasy and Empathic Concern subscales, with a small and medium effect size respectively, while no significant differences were found in the remaining subscales. Conclusion: We found that gender influences the scores obtained on the IRI scale by individuals from Buenos Aires. Women stood out compared to men in the tendency to identify with the actions and feelings of fictional characters, as well as the tendency to experience feelings of compassion and concern towards others, when they are in unfortunate situations.
