Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this systematic review is to examine the use of pseudohomophones in reading and word recognition tasks in transparent orthographies. A systematic review of the literature available from the last 15 years and up to May 2022 in various databases (PubMed, Scopus and SciELO) was carried out. We searched for original articles from the last 15 years that had evaluated reading and/or word recognition in adult participants without impairments and that had used pseudohomophones as stimuli. The search yielded a total of 188 records, of which 19 met the inclusion criteria. Different recognition and reading tasks were identified, although the most used was the visual lexical decision. In addition, and largely due to the orthographic characteristics of each language, different ways of constructing pseudohomophones were observed. The reviewed studies report findings from behavioral tasks, neurophysiological, neuroimaging and eye tracking techniques. Within behavioral outcomes, hit/miss ratio and reaction times were the main data sources. It can be concluded that pseudohomophones constitute an important tool to study the role of phonological information in reading and word recognition.
