Abstract

Parenting styles play an indispensable role in the development of adolescents and are associated with quality of life. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between parenting styles and anxiety in adolescents in high school from an educational institution of the Baños Canton. The research was based on a positivist paradigm, quantitative, non-experimental cross-sectional design, descriptive and correlational in scope. The sample consisted of 208 adolescents aged between 14 and 18 years. Data were collected using a socio-demographic form and assessment instruments such as the Steinberg Parenting Styles Test and the STAI questionnaire. The results showed that the predominant parenting style was authoritative, with above average levels of state anxiety (41.0 %) and high levels of trait anxiety (46.0 %). Furthermore, the correlation between parenting style and state and trait anxiety is very low, that is to say, state anxiety (rs = 0.719) and trait anxiety (rs = 0.429). These results are relevant for understanding the problem of the variables studied and should motivate future research in Ecuador, since the possibility of a correlation is not excluded.
