SELF-ESTEEM IN THE COUPLE RELATIONSHIP: MEDIATING ROLE BETWEEN EMOTIONAL DEPENDENCE, COUPLE RELATIONSHIP, GENDER AND SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS IN YOUNG PEOPLE

the subjective perception of self-worth, that is, self-esteem, has been considered a possible mediating factor in the presence of emotional dependence. The aim of the present study was to analyze the relationship between self-esteem and emotional dependence in young university students, using a cross-sectional correlational design. A sample of university students was evaluated using a sociodemographic form, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Emotional Dependence Questionnaire. Fifty-one percent of the participants were women, with a mean age of 22.31 years. It was identified that 41.12 % presented low self-esteem and 48.60 % showed indicators of emotional dependence. No statistically significant correlation was found between both variables (r = 0.91, p = 0.354). However, there was a significant relationship between self-esteem and being in a romantic relationship (p = 0.035), as well as between emotional dependence and the variables gender (p = 0.051), relationship status (p = 0.050) and socioeconomic level (p = 0.050). Of the total number of participants with medium or high self-esteem (n = 52), 52.38% presented high levels of emotional dependence. In conclusion, although a direct relationship between self-esteem and emotional dependence was not confirmed, relevant associations were identified with sociodemographic variables, particularly relational status and gender.
