Abstract

Social media has a significant impact on the mental health of adolescents, exposing them to information that may be outside their training criteria and require constant adult supervision. The objective of this study was to analyze how technological changes influence the perceptions and behaviors of adolescents through the use of social networks, where fashions, styles and challenges are explored and idealized. These platforms can directly affect self-esteem, especially when used as means of physical, ideological, economic, and racial comparison. The methodology used was descriptive, using qualitative units of analysis of systemic review. Data were collected from primary and secondary sources, including Scielo, Dialnet, Redalyc and psychology journals. Inclusion and exclusion criteria based on the PRISMA method were applied during the last 5 years. The results highlight the importance of educating adolescents about the appropriate use of social networks, concluding that their constant use can have emotional, psychological and self-esteem effects.
